The best are offered by St. Croix Safari Tours (tel. 340/773-6700) in a 25-passenger open-air bus tour run by a hip tour guide who knows all about the history of the island. Tours crisscross the island with stops at former plantation houses, historic Frederiksted, the Salt River landfall of Columbus, and a drive through the "Rain Forest," with a stop for lunch. There are plenty of photo ops. The cost of the tour is $38 per person (with an absolute minimum of four people). There is no central pick-up point to start the tour; arrangements about where to meet are usually worked out when you call for a reservation. If you're staying at hotels in and around Christiansted, they will agree to pick up, but they may not if you're at a remote B&B mid-island.
